Purusha Suktam is one of the most well-known suktams in the Vedas. Purusha suktam not defense purusha (men) or stree (Women) This suktam relates the story of the conception of the creation not men or women its about the VishwaMaya Jeevi. Suktam means something explained very well , its called suktam in Sanskrit
The Origin of the World in Purusha Suktam
Rendering to the earliest Indian viewpoint, the creation originated in presence through a boundless sacrifice (Yagna). In this yagna, the “Purusha” or “Cosmic Being” (Vishwa Maya Jeevi) is sacrificed.
Sahasrasirsha Purushah Sahasrakshah Sahasrapath
Sa bhumim vishwato vritva attyatishtadasangulam
That Purusha has thousands of heads, thousands of eyes, thousands of legs. He spreads the earth in all directions, extending deep within and above it.
NOTE : If we want explain Sahasra in English we will tell as thousand actually Sahasra means in Sanskrit its has no limit which is uncountable
This describes the form of the universe. It was through the sacrifice of this Purusha that the worlds, gods, the Bhutamana, the material and spiritual universes came into being.
Creation of the Universe through Sacrifice
According to the Purusha Sukta , the creation of the universe took place in this way:
1. Sacrifice of Purusha – The gods offered Purusha for sacrifice and separated him into parts.
2. Beginning of the Vedas – Over this sacrifice, the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda were born.
3. Beginning of the Varna Classification – The head of Purusha became the Brahmins, the shoulders became the Kshatriyas, the thighs became the Vaishyas and the feet became the Shudras.
4. Beginning of the Worlds – From Purusha, heaven, earth and the underworld developed.
5. Moon, Sun and Planets – From his mind the moon emerged, from his eyes the sun emerged, from his breath the air emerged, from his navel the space emerged.
Message to the Creation of the Universe
The Purusha Sukta contains many secrets. The main message in it is:
– The universe was created through a great sacrifice.
– All living beings are in mutual cooperation.
– All classes are equal in the structure of society.
– Everything in creation is interconnected
In Indian philosophy, it is said that creation begins with Brahma ( Virata Purushudu ) the all-pervading Parabrahman and merges back into the same Supreme Soul. The Purush Sukta is not just a creation story, it provides a deep spiritual message.
Conclusion
This Sukta not only describes the creation story of the world, but also describes the structure of society and the philosophy of life. What we know from the Purush Sukta is that the universe was formed through a yagna and that it moves forward with mutual cooperation. This is one of the greatest aspects of Indian philosophy.
It is in the Rigveda (10.90) mandala. This suktam describes the principles of creation, the glory of God, and sacrifice. It consists of 16 mantras.

1. Purusha – Parabrahma Tattva
Purusha Suktam the source of creation.
2. Srishti Tattvam
The sukta says that the entire creation came into being by offering this Purusha as a sacrifice. Through the sacrifice, the gods, the Vedas, the people, the eight directions, and all the beings emerged.
The sukta says that the Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra varnas emerged from the parts of the Purusha’s body .
– Brahmins – Born from the mouth of the Purusha (Vedic knowledge, instruction).
– Kshatriyas – Born from the shoulders (politics, protection).
– Vaishyas – Born from the thighs (business, agriculture).
– Sudras – Born from the feet (services, human service).
4. Origin of all Vedas
According to the Purusha Sukta, the Vedas created from Yajna. Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda – all of them created from the navel, head, face, heart and also some believes that vedam is the breath of the Purusha.
5. Production of the material world
The earth, sky, rivers, oceans, moon, sun, and gods—all these created from the intergalactic sacrifice of the Virat Purusha.
6. Yajna Tattvam
The Purusha Sukta speaks of Yajna as the source of the
universe. Yajna is the Dharma, Yajna is the reason for the prosperity of all
living beings.
7. Bhagavat Paratattvam
The Purusha Sukta highlights the Paratattva of God – He is
always present in the past, future, and present.
Purusha Suktam Principles to be applied to human life
1. Social structure – Every caste is equally necessary for
society.
2. Yajna Tattva – One should live righteously.
3. Rita and Satyam –
Truth should be given priority.
4.Vedic knowledge –
Studying the Vedas is beneficial for humanity.
